Flaming creatures

director: Jack Smith
original title: Flaming creatures
country: United States
year: 1963
running time: 45 min.

synopsis

This legendary film on the free poetics of the body works with the DIY aesthetic, sprightly staging, performances, and humor. It transgressively refers to the approaches of melodrama and burlesque which Smith uses to create an unconventional and - for the period - radical depiction of sex. For its erotic scenes, it was banned in many countries, and in the United States it ignited a debate on censorship.

biography

Jack Smith (1932-1989) was an American underground filmmaker, photographer, visual artist, performer, and actor. When creating films, he worked with a simple environment and special effects that he invented, and repeatedly used the method of collage. In this work full of humor, eroticism, and violence, he often draws attention thematically to ubiquitous commodification.
