The Hand That Touches the Arm
Calac Nogueira / United States, Brazil / 2022 / World Premiere / 13 min.
synopsis
A compilation of scenes from classic Hollywood films, in which a man is touching a woman’s elbow, attributes a deeper meaning to the simple gesture. It does not matter if the man is helping the woman to get on a train or if he is assaulting her; the gesture gradually becomes more and more sinister, emphasizing sexist subtext, ubiquitous in classic Hollywood cinema.“One of the things we learn in movies directed by men is what the ‚fantasy woman‘ is. What we learn in movies directed by women is what real women are about.“ (Jane Campion)
